Our Trainee Law Costs Draftsperson, Beth Brayshaw, has told us more about herself, how she found the trainee recruitment process and her experience of the training programme so far. Bidwell Henderson are extremely passionate about bringing in and nurturing new talent in costs drafting and Beth is a shining example of this.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m from Sheffield but have recently bought my first house in Rotherham with my partner. I have a BSc Hons in Business and Maths and joined a law firm when I finished university. I was then lucky enough to take a couple of years out of work and travelled around Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia. I think of all the places I visited my favourite place would be New Zealand or Thailand. Upon my return to the UK I re-joined the law firm and worked there for 4 years before joining Bidwell Henderson.

How did you find the recruitment process for the trainee position?

I was fortunate enough to work with Bidwell Henderson as a client of theirs whilst working in a law firm. BH had always come across as really friendly, knowledgeable and willing to go the extra mile to ensure their clients were happy. When I decided that cost drafting was the next step in my career, I knew exactly which firm I wanted to work for, so I applied to be a trainee at BH! The information I was given about the training programme, work style and the BH team all sounded like a perfect fit for me, and I am so grateful to have been able to approach the team about a role with them. From the first email exchange I felt valued and excited to start my new journey. I was kept up to date with everything before joining and was sent all the documents to fill out in plenty of time before starting the role.

What was your first week like at BH?

It was great. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, and I didn’t have any IT issues at all which is amazing! I really liked the training programme on Thinkific as it allows you to work at your own pace. I also enjoyed being able to ‘meet’ my cohort through teams.

How did you feel starting the job given the current global circumstances?

I was nervous about leaving my previous job given the Covid-19 crisis, but I knew Bidwell Henderson was a really fantastic opportunity and I enjoyed working from home, so I was also very excited.

What is it like working with the training team?

David is fantastic. He is always around to answer questions and doesn’t make you feel daft if you ask the daft questions. There are also plenty of friendly faces to ask questions if you get stuck on anything.

What was your experience like on your induction day?

The induction day went smoothly, and it was a good opportunity to meet the directors, managers and IT support. It was also nice to meet our cohort and learn a bit about each other.

Who has been your go to person for support throughout your training?

David is a fantastic source of knowledge and is able to answer anything you need to know during your training! We also had a little teams group with the people in my cohort and it’s nice to be able to put odd questions in there as well and support each other that way.

How would you describe your experience so far in three words?

Informative, intense & exciting.

Is there anything you wish you could go back in time and tell yourself about your first week?

Not to be as nervous! The whole team were so warm and welcoming and it’s a training programme that you can move through at your own pace so you can spend as much time as you like on topics you’re less sure of.

How would you describe the Bidwell Henderson Training Programme for future potential trainees to help them better understand what’s involved?

The training programme is a really detailed step by step path to becoming a costs draftsman. There is a good mix of reading, quizzes, surveys and tasks to make sure you keep your brain engaged. The daily tutorials are also a good way to make sure any questions are answered whilst still fresh in your mind and you can always go back through topics you’re not sure on.
